A Better way to do Business
According to current legislation, corporations are to think and act primarily for their shareholders, doing what is best for them. While this policy may have been been created with good intentions, its effects are now to drive businesses to think only of their bottom line. B Corps are movement away from that model, a group of companies choosing to focus instead on how they can benefit the world. In increasingly more states, legislation is being created to allow and support B Corps. This legislation demands that certified B Corps work towards having a positive effect socially and environmentally. B Corps are also required to maintain a higher level of transparency.
B Corps are proof positive that we have the will and the ability to use business for good social impact. This has been Better Way Imports’ dream from its inception.
Only now it’s official.
Better Way Imports named “Best for the Community” by B Corp
Better Way Imports ranks among the “best for the community” according to the nonprofit B Lab and its B Corp certification process. The company was honored at the 2016 “Best for the World” gathering sponsored by B the Change Media and held at the University of California, Berkeley. The event honored companies whose groundbreaking business models are best for workers, best for communities, and best for the environment.
“All of us with Better Way Imports have created a tangible way for people to participate in the fight to end human trafficking,” said CEO Bill Leep. “We believe that we’ve fused two great models – abolitionism and direct sales – into a powerful business model. So it’s gratifying for our team to be listed as ‘Best for the Community’ by B Labs.”
B Corp is to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or USDA Organic certification is to milk. B Corps are for-profit companies certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. There are only 1,800 Certified B Corps worldwide and of those, Better Way Imports ranked among the top 10 percent as “best for the community.”
Better Way Imports promotes the glory of God through operating a business which seeks to advance the companies that work to end sex-trafficking. There are an estimated 20 to 30 million slaves around the world. Every Better Way Imports product is handcrafted, most by women rescued from slavery. One of the newest supplier initiatives is to present opportunities that keep women in a rural community from becoming sex workers. So the products purchased provide dignified employment and an opportunity for a new life to women who were once enslaved. The Freedom Parties hosted in homes in the U.S. provide hope and change to families overseas. And the “Freedom Fighters” who sell Better Way products make a difference to families and communities here in the U.S. and around the world.
